Google names its new UK headquarters Platform 37
Google’s new UK headquarters at King’s Cross, London, has been named Platform 37, with the first occupants set to move in over the summer.
BDP is the executive architect and lighting designer delivering this landmark project, working alongside the concept architect Heatherwick Studio and Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). The building’s name reflects both its location next to King’s Cross station and a defining moment in the evolution of artificial intelligence, signalling its role at the forefront of innovation.
In a recent blog, Demis Hassabis, Co-Founder and CEO of Google DeepMind, described the name as a nod to “Move 37” a pivotal play made by DeepMind’s AlphaGo system in 2016, widely seen as a turning point in the modern era of AI.
He also confirmed that Google DeepMind and Google teams will begin moving into Platform 37 this summer. Later this year, the AI Exchange will open on the ground floor—a new public space dedicated to deepening understanding of artificial intelligence through free educational programmes, interactive exhibitions and cultural events.
The building’s design is defined by its innovative hung structure and triple-height spaces designed to foster collaboration and support new ways of working. Above, a panoramic roof garden enhances urban biodiversity, while at street level, a mix of shops, hospitality and community spaces brings energy and human scale to the development.
Platform 37 is being developed from the ground up and will contribute to the Knowledge Quarter and King’s Cross’s growing knowledge-based economy.
