Jane Finch Mall planning framework recognized with Canadian Award for Planning Excellence
The long-term planning framework for Jane Finch Mall has been recognized with a 2025 Canadian Award for Planning Excellence from the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP). Developed through a deep and inclusive engagement process, the framework represents a transformative and equity-centered approach to community planning.

Over a period of more than two years, a multidisciplinary team – including Urban Strategies and BDP Quadrangle - engaged more than 2,000 residents and 35 local organizations to co-create a future vision for the Jane Finch Mall site, located in one of Canada’s most multicultural neighbourhoods. The resulting plan focuses on increasing density along the new Finch West LRT, while prioritizing affordable housing, economic opportunities, community spaces and improved public infrastructure.

This recognition from CIP highlights a new standard for inclusive, community-led planning - one rooted in the lived experiences and aspirations of local residents. With early development set to begin along Finch Avenue and a phased approach to revitalization over the coming decades, the framework will guide the evolution of the site into a mixed-use, transit-connected destination that continues to serve as a vital anchor for the Jane Finch community.
