Development of an integrated estate optimisation and Net Zero Carbon strategy to support long-term investment decisions, improve estate performance and create a more efficient, resilient and future-ready campus.
Newcastle University commissioned us in 2025 to provide independent Estate Optimisation and Net Zero Carbon advice as part of a wider institutional transformation programme.
The University faced the dual challenge of addressing long-standing estate issues while adapting to changing academic, operational and sustainability requirements. It required a clear, evidence-based direction for future investment, supported by specialist expertise in optimisation, decarbonisation and scenario modelling.
Working as strategic advisers, we brought together multidisciplinary expertise across estates, sustainability, digital tools and campus planning. Through stakeholder engagement, technical assessment, site visits, digital modelling and iterative scenario testing, we developed a comprehensive understanding of the estate and identified opportunities for future improvement.
The work delivered ten integrated strategies addressing estate performance, utilisation, campus experience, infrastructure planning and future adaptability. A bespoke scenario-testing dashboard using the Great Estates Toolkit enabled the University to compare options and assess cost, energy and carbon implications.
The resulting framework provides a flexible, costed approach to estate optimisation and Net Zero Carbon interventions, supported by implementation sequencing and prioritisation plans.
Creating clarity for future investment
Our Estate Optimisation advisory services supported Newcastle University in developing an evidence-based framework to inform future estate decisions and maximise portfolio performance. Through qualitative engagement, quantitative analysis, technical assessment and scenario modelling, we established a clear understanding of estate opportunities and priorities.
Working with stakeholders across the institution, we identified opportunities to improve utilisation, right-size the estate, strengthen campus identity and align investment with future teaching, research and operational requirements.
Using the Great Estates Toolkit, we created a scenario-testing dashboard to support option evaluation, prioritisation and governance. This provides the University with a flexible platform for informed decision making and long-term estate performance management.
Aligning carbon reduction with investment
Our Decarbonisation Strategy advisory services supported Newcastle University’s long-term sustainability objectives by embedding Net Zero Carbon considerations into estate planning and investment decisions.
Through technical assessment, scenario modelling and pathway analysis, we developed flexible Net Zero-ready routes that could be phased in line with funding availability, operational requirements and infrastructure upgrades. This approach enabled the University to evaluate the relationship between carbon reduction, cost and delivery priorities.
The Great Estates Toolkit dashboard supported assessment of energy and carbon implications across different scenarios, helping the University prioritise future interventions. Our work provides a clear and adaptable pathway towards Net Zero Carbon while reducing long-term risk and supporting a more resilient estate.
