Client
The National Gallery

Kengo Kuma & Associates, in collaboration with BDP and MICA, have been selected to design a new wing for the National Gallery as part of its £750 million Project Domani. Chosen from 65 international submissions, the winning proposal was praised by the jury as “exemplary” for its architectural sensitivity, innovation, and strong integration with the existing Sainsbury Wing and surrounding urban context.

The project represents the most significant transformation of the National Gallery in its 200 year history. Central to this vision is the expansion of the collection beyond 1900, enabling the institution to present a complete overview of Western painting within a single, unified setting.

The proposed design balances continuity and contrast: the lower gallery level aligns with the architectural language of adjacent historic spaces through vaulted forms, while the upper level introduces a more geometric expression. Externally, the building emphasises openness and connectivity, enhancing links between Leicester Square and Trafalgar Square through landscaped public spaces and a carefully scaled massing strategy that draws in natural light.

The development will be constructed on the site of St Vincent House, completing the Gallery’s campus while unlocking new public and cultural opportunities.
