As demand for lab and office space currently outweighs supply, a lack of specialised, multifunctioning buildings limits options for SME SciTech businesses and start-ups. We have created an animation, Design for Speculative Science, to illustrate how a capable and adaptable base build laboratory space can act as the integrated base structure on which to dock modular add-ons to accommodate diverse occupiers. Starting with an efficient grid, it demonstrates how the positioning of cores and careful zoning can ensure flexibility, enabling start-ups to scaleup and undertake more demanding science in situ rather than relocate. Our cities are growing rapidly, racing to deliver more housing, sustainable workplaces, retail, entertainment hubs together with transport connectivity. In high rise, multicultural cities like Toronto, adding density is an important alternative to expanding urban sprawl. But how can new developments still deliver architectural individualism and placemaking whilst reflecting the uniqueness of their context?
In this report, we invite members from our global multidisciplinary collective to share their insights on a key design consideration for successful high-density living in their cities, and the value it can bring.
