Rethinking the Urban Landscape

Rethinking The Urban LandscapeWhen: 3rd August 2015 – June 2016
Where: Newcastle, Leeds, Sheffield, Wales, Suffolk and Coventry

Following the success of the Rethinking the Urban Landscape exhibition, earlier this year, it will now tour the country over the next 8 months. Curated jointly by the Landscape Institute and the Building Centre, it highlights the importance of landscape in shaping our cities. BDP’s design proposals for the Avon River Precinct in Christchurch, New Zealand demonstrate the unique opportunity to create a greener, more accessible city following the devastating earthquake damage. The river corridor is re-established as an important natural habitat and the rejuvenated landscape reflects the weaving together of the city’s cultures. Alder Hey Children’s Health Park in Liverpool, due to complete in the autumn, positions the new hospital for children in the heart of the local community parkland to enhance both patient and visitor experience. The meadow landscape rolls up onto the ‘fingers’ of the building to allow the children to interact with the natural landscape which acts as a healing resource.

The exhibition showcases some of the UK’s most powerful contemporary landscape projects from large-scale to small community-led schemes to illustrate the importance of investing in green infrastructure for safer and healthier cities. Full details of venues and open times can be found using the link below.

The exhibition tour has been extended and is visiting the West Midlands, opening in Coventry Cathedral from the 9th June.
