Marr College Wins Top Education Award

Marr College, Troon was recognised at the recent Education Buildings Scotland Awards 2017, where it won the prestigious Project of the Year at an inaugural two-day conference and exhibition which brought together built environment and policy professionals to ensure Scottish learning environments are sustainable, inclusive and welcoming. The judges said “Too often overlooked, the opportunity to retain and prolong the culture of  education on this site will see the creation of a vibrant and imaginative environment which will benefit generations to come. This part refurbishment part new build project illustrates how a listed building can be sensitively extended to provide a learning facility fit for future learning."

The refurbishment of Marr College’s Grade B listed building, which was in need of extensive restoration, included the addition of a new technical wing, three storey high learning plazas and a rationalised community sports hub.

Marking the milestone, an official opening ceremony was held on 29 November, with Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Education in the Scottish Government, John Swinney, joining the celebration with students, staff and South Ayrshire Council. John Swinney commented, “It is a great pleasure to open the magnificent Marr College Troon - an outstanding blend of old and new to create a 21st century school.”
