Project details

New 50 bed community nursing unit incorporating various day rooms, dining areas, hairdressers, therapy and multi sensory rooms, chapel, kitchen, common and staff areas.

BDP worked as part of an integrated design team, advising on building form, orientation, daylight, and air leakage control strategies. We designed the complete buildings services systems for the building including the heat pump and heat recovery system.

Our work also included the submission of an application of grant funding from SEAI.

Active energy conservation systems include ground source heat pump, high frequency lighting, heat recovery ventilation and advanced controls.

Brief

  • provide new accommodation for 50 patients
  • incorporate best practice sustainability and energy efficiency measures

Results

  • the building achieved an impressive air tightness value of 3.9m3/m2.  This was supported by a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery
  • the main heating system was a close loop heat pump system with its efficiency increased dramatically by an innovative technique developed by BDP that involves the recovery of waste latent heat from the ventilation system. The ground loop system is also used to provide free cooling during peak summer conditions
