London Open House 2014

Date: 20th – 21st September

Bridge Academy, Hackney

When: Saturday 20th; 10.30 - 15.30
Where: Laburnum Street, London E2 8BA

Situated on the Regents Canal on an inner-city brownfield site the academy is an innovative vertical interactive learning environment integrated into the city fabric. Conceived as a piece of architectural origami, a sweeping structural arch supports the centre of the school, allowing much of the building to be column free and totally flexible. Galleried learning spaces are set around a social gathering area and learning hub and the teaching terraces extend as outdoor classrooms overlooking the canal.

Highbury Grove and Samuel Rhodes School

When: Saturday 20th;10.00 – 14.00
Where: 8 Highbury Grove, London N5 2EA

The design wraps the teaching faculties around a new garden and external learning space, with an internal covered street creating a social route through the building. An important principle in siting the two schools together was to enable mainstream and special education needs school children to socialise and work together where appropriate. A user-friendly landscaped environment facilitates the setting for track events, ball games and informal garden spaces. 20% of the energy is generated from on-site renewable energy installations and a flat slab concrete frame construction built around existing buildings.
