IALD Enlighten Americas 2015 - Ars Magna Lucis Et Umbrae (Great Art of Light and Shadow)

When: 8th – 10th October
Where: Hilton Baltimore, Maryland, USA

Lighting director Colin Ball returns to IALD Enlighten Americas to present on Friday 9th October at 10.30 am in the Art Track.  Colin has developed a series of lectures studying the relationship between space and mind through light, entitled Sacred Light, and will present the latest in the series under the heading Ars Magna Lucis Et Umbrae.  The title is from the published studies of light by Athanasius Kircher, a Jesuit priest in 17th century Rome.  Colin will address the need to understand light’s value as a psychological trigger, not just as a mechanistic function of eyesight, and look at how Renaissance philosophers unconsciously projected the inner workings of their minds and belief systems into their studies of alchemy and light.

The three-day IALD Enlighten Americas 2015 conference will be tailored to themes raised by UNESCO’s International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL2015), and will showcase current issues and trends impacting the work of architectural lighting designers.  Colin has also participated in the Night of Heritage Light, a national event to illuminate ten UNESCO World Heritage sites throughout the UK in recognition of the UNESCO International Year of Light 2015, when he collaborated with Iain Ruxton of Spiers and Major to light the Tower of London.
