Final phase of Silverburn complete

The £20m leisure extension at Silverburn in Glasgow is now fully open and completes the shopping centre development. The extension is a confident new marker for the western end of the north west corner of the site, facing the Pollok civic realm.

The 100,000 sq ft scheme has extended the existing wintergarden and refocused the leisure and food offer within the centre. It is anchored by a 14-screen cinema and features 11 new restaurants, many of which are new brands to Silverburn.

A new entrance bisects the cinema box and links the public realm directly with the heart of the wintergarden. The cinema foyer occupies the first floor above the new entrance and adds activity and interest to the public facing elements. The fractured planes of the elevation contribute a human scale and provide a unique identity for this final piece of the development.

Guy Wells, Development Manager at Hammerson, said: 'By delivering more for Silverburn's visitors, the centre is now set to play an even greater role in the local community and beyond, which is not only important in helping to drive dwell time, catering and retail sales but it is also vital in future-proofing the continued success of Silverburn.'

BDP designed the scheme for Hammerson who acquired the shopping centre in 2009. BDP also designed the first phase which was the largest shopping centre in Scotland when it opened in 2007.
