Ayr Grammar Primary School

Facts

Location Client Cost Size Completion
Scotland, UK South Ayrshire Council £16m 4,845 sqm 2021

Project details

Blurring the division between school and neighbourhood, a historic sandstone building - previously hosting the now relocated Ayr Academy - was chosen as the setting for a new primary school. Positioned on the banks of the River Ayr, the redevelopment reinvigorates the waterside town centre with a multi-generational offer that extends beyond education alone.

The mixed-use development comprises a nursery, primary school and community arts centre. Additionally, it provides a new home for the Ayrshire Archives and Registry, which stores the repositories for historical records and the Ayrshire fine art collection.

Headed by education but complemented by broader community facilities, the redevelopment preserves the historically rich site - which has been the location of a school for more than 400 years - and presents the town centre with a new cultural offer.

Brief

  • convert and extend the existing Ayr Academy Category B listed Victorian building into a contemporary primary school
  • repurpose the town centre with a multi-generational community offer while preserving the history of the area and legacy of education at the site

Results

  • a reinvigorated town centre with a multi-generational community offer
  • a thoughtfully restored Grade B listed building, supporting a longstanding history of education while delivering a contemporary learning environment within a tight urban site
  • improved street connections and an active frontage to the town’s South Harbour Street
