Project details

Concept design for the Char Yong Cultural Hub draws inspiration from the philosophy of placing people at the heart of the Hakka community life. As the main social space, the courtyard is set as the stage and focal point of the cultural hub, surrounded by elevated social corridors and a multiplicity of programme and activities that are spread vertically across the building stratum. This arrangement is analogous to that of the centripetal layout in tu lous, where programme are arranged around the courtyard in the cultural hub with the intention to encourage visual interaction and social engagement between the Hakka community, tenants and the public.

Facing Lorong 18 Geylang, we proposed to design an art screen which is as an abstract interpretation of the Dabu mountain skyline to provide a sense of "enclosure" for the courtyard and the building interior spaces. The screen doubles up as a building performance device, providing shade from the direct western sun. This key facade element is visible from Lorong 18 Geylang and within the building interior spaces. Similar to an optical art, it appears differently from various vantage points as users navigate around the building.
