Project details

MAR Shopping Algarve is a new retail destination designed for IKEA Centres and featuring an anchor IKEA store, a designer outlet and an outdoor leisure area.

Set in the beautiful landscape of southern Portugal the building’s white cladding stands out and reflects the strong heritage of traditional local architecture. Designed in response to the climate of almost continuous sunshine in the Algarve, the embossed diamond pattern of the cladding is revealed by shadows tracking the sun’s movement while the deep recessed entrances and terrace offer protection from direct sunlight and views out to the ocean.

The naturally lit interior benefits from a combination of indirect sunlight and carefully positioned lightwells projecting the intricate pattern of the unique veiled ceiling down into the mall. The ceiling filters the sunlight during the day and becomes a canvas of elaborate pattern at night. Floating pods located at both ends of the mall add interest and character and draw shoppers towards the upper levels.
