Project details

The MSSI forms the final element of the 1976 BDP designed masterplan for the University of Limerick, completing the academic campus on the south side of the river Shannon.

A research institute which delivers excellence to industry, the design sets laboratory and researchers’ workspace either side of a central light slot with academic floors arranged in ascending tiers around a protected researchers’ garden. Three stories of laboratories and two stories of mixed cellular and open plan offices accommodating around 100 researchers are linked visually and physically across the void by the inter-relation of bridges and glazing.

A promenade staircase is crowned with a fully glazed cantilevered meeting room which overlooks the researchers’ garden with views over the river and the landscape beyond.
