BDP’s Science Based Targets

To support the global climate goal to half global emissions before 2030, BDP has recently set Science Based Targets (SBTs) through the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).

What is the SBTi?

The SBTi aims to help companies set ambitious greenhouse gas emission reduction targets based on scientific evidence and with the goals of the Paris Agreement. The initiative encourages companies to set emission reduction targets according to the latest climate science to ensure they are consistent with the necessary global efforts to mitigate climate change.

What do SBTs cover?

SBTs cover both direct and indirect emissions, which are split into three different scopes:

  • Scope 1: direct emissions from company-owned or controlled sources (for example, the gas boilers used in our studios)

  • Scope 2: indirect emissions from the generation of purchased energy (for example, the electricity used in our studios)

  • Scope 3: all other indirect emissions that occur in a company’s value chain, including both upstream and downstream emissions (for example, business travel to visit projects on site)

BDP’s SBTs

Setting these science-based targets reaffirms BDP’s commitment to addressing climate change and taking proactive measures to rapidly reduce our contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.

To form our baseline year for these targets, we collected data from all 19 of our global studios from the financial year 2019-2020 (our most recent financial year unimpacted by the COVID-19 pandemic). This included gas and electricity consumption, business travel, and expenditure on goods and services across each of our studios. Using the SBTi-recommended tools and calculators, we set and submitted our own targets to the SBTi for verification. This information was independently assessed to ensure that our data and targets met the strict SBT criteria.

In June 2023, BDP received the following official targets from the SBTi:

  1. To reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 46.2% by 2030
  2. To increase active annual sourcing of renewable electricity from 95.6% to 100% by 2026, and through 2030
  3. To reduce Scope 3 emissions by 46.2% by 2030

Below is a video that provides insight into how we aim to achieve these ambitious targets

We will continually monitor and report our progress against these goals in our annual Environmental Management Report, which you can find here.

Through this process, BDP will embrace new technologies, processes, and ways of working, to help increase our energy efficiency, reduce waste, and improve resource management. While our goals may be ambitious, it is a necessary challenge we are ready to take on.
