Planning granted for Whitehill & Bordon Town Centre

Designs for Whitehill & Bordon new town centre were granted planning approval by East Hampshire District Council on 6 February. The first major occupiers and operators for the scheme have also been confirmed.

BDP has designed three mixed use retail blocks comprising a 20,000 sq ft food store, retail units, a multi-storey car park and 180 apartments that are set around landscaped podium gardens. Other plans for the scheme include a six-screen cinema operated by The Big Picture, an indoor market ran by Market Asset Management, an arts and heritage centre, and a business hub managed by SiGNAL and Oxford Innovation which includes co-working space and a rooftop bar.

Head of housing Kathryn Tombling said: “This is a significant project for BDP and expands our mixed use residential portfolio. We worked closely with the Whitehill & Bordon Regeneration Company and East Hampshire District Council to design a vibrant mix of uses that will regenerate the town centre and provide a place where residents and visitors can live, shop and work as well as enjoy leisure time.”

Project lead at Whitehill & Bordon Regeneration Company, James Child said: “The delivery of a high quality new town centre will be a huge landmark for the regeneration of Whitehill & Bordon. It will bring new jobs and leisure options to the area and will become the heartbeat of the town. It is no secret that towns and cities throughout the country have been impacted by a challenging retail environment and we have worked hard to create a town centre masterplan that offers something different. To be able to bring a six-screen cinema and arts centre to the area, as well as space for small businesses and local retailers in the heart of the town centre is extremely exciting. They will sit alongside larger national retailers, independent and big brand restaurants and a vibrant public realm that will host community led events throughout the year.”

The town centre is expected to open in stages between autumn 2020 and spring 2021.
