Project details

This landmark project has changed the way the industry thinks about sustainable construction.

With Morgan Sindall as contractor and architects Architype, we engineered this exemplar low carbon building that achieved two of the most rigorous sustainable built environment standards.

The project is designed to achieve a 100 year lifespan and exemplifies the use of low embodied carbon materials. Use of local materials and construction was maximised to provide a low carbon building and help stimulate the local economy and traditional skills. Timber came from Thetford Forest, straw for the innovative prefabricated thatch panels from Norfolk and various low carbon building materials including wood wool internal cladding, sonaspray ceiling treatments and flint were all locally sourced and fabricated.

Probably the UK's greenest commercial building, it has set the benchmark high for future sustainable development across the globe.

Great work! I remember your presentation of ideas going down a storm, you certainly delivered on your idea, and it’s not often that that happens! Although your ideas were not ‘straightforward’ with respect to peripheral issues, such as the BCO, BREEAM credits, supply chain knowledge, and end user/tenant expectations, these were all addressed in a methodical way, which just goes to show that you can deliver something different, if you try.
