Galway Racecourse - Killinan Stand

Facts

Location Client Cost Completion
Galway, Ireland Galway Racecourse €17m 2007

Project details

This 6000m2 new stand for Galway racecourse was completed on time for the 2007 summer race season.

The main circulation and viewing areas are largely naturally ventilated, minimising energy consumption while providing a comfortable internal environment.  Monitoring of the space temperatures during the race week has demonstrated that the strategy was highly successful in maintaining comfortable air temperatures despite the large internal gains and solar gains from the south facing glazing that opens onto the race track.

Brief

  • provide M&E systems that best suit the cyclic usage pattern of the racecourse, which ranges from minimal service on no-race days to full demand during racing events. Provide flexibility to adopt usage for other types of events e.g., conferences and weddings

Results

  • flexible M&E services that respond well to fluctuating demands
  • BDP’s design includes an innovative de-misting system that successfully keeps the main viewing glazing free from condensation through the use of discrete jets which wash the glazing with de-humidified air
